Riga Art Nouveau - 2 hours walking tour

(Price: 20 EUR (includes entrance to Art Nouveau Museum))

10:00 Meeting in Hotel Lobby

In Riga Art Nouveau style is best revealed in its architecture. Art Nouveau features smoothly curved lines, geometrically precise figures, asymmetrical compositions, reliefs and bay windows with fantastic ornaments and facades decorated with sculptures.

There are approximately 800 Art Nouveau buildings in Riga, constructed in the early 20th century, designed mostly by local architects. The buildings in Alberta street are masterpieces of the most famous Art Nouveau masters in Riga – Mikhail Eisenstein and Eižens Laube.
During the prime of Art Nouveau in Riga, it was common to style everything after the new fashion, not only the building itself but also the interior, furniture and even cutlery. Visit the Art Nouveau museum to see the interior and household items of a wealthy Riga citizen in the early 20th century.

The history of the buildings in Elizabetes street is as diverse as everything that has happened in the last century of Riga. Almost like a boulevard due to the parks and gardens, the street is one of the most upscale residential areas nowadays as it was back then.

Nowadays it is still one of the largest marketplaces in Europe, and definitely one of the most visited, as 80.000 to 100.000 people shop there per day on the average. The gentle, ionized sea air heals the respiratory tract and strengthens the immune system while the aroma of pine forests promotes heart health. Mud and sulfur baths are also offered here. The wooden architecture is also one of the characteristic features of Jurmala, especially the original houses with decorative turrets and glassed-in verandas.
